We need black people in these posts not because they are black, but because white people are still so prejudice they do not trust other blacks. In fact many whites in Alabama fear blacks. They have unfounded fear that if blacks have the top political offices in a city or state it will somehow hurt them.
With all due respect for our mayor and governor, there are many blacks equally qualified for office. In fact there are many people both black and white who are much more qualified for these offices than those currently in power. But white people have had control of Alabama politics so long that we have never had a black governor or black mayor of Montgomery.
Part of the problem here is the fact that we have no term limitations for mayor. Another part of the problem is that the current Montgomery mayor and governor use the race card to generate fear and suspicion of blacks so as to gain votes and maintain power. This is a sad state of affairs because most black people are just like white people in that they are law abiding, hard working, good people.
Another part of the problem is that the electorate would vote for politicians who still play the race card. A possible solution to this problem is to increase the number of younger people who vote and making it easier to vote via usage of technology. The rational here is that younger people do not have as much prejudice as older voters with traditional values.
Voting via electronic ballots posted on the internet and mass mailing of ballots to all registered voters would dramatically increase participation in the election process. This is not to say voters should vote for someone just because they are black or white, but to say that the current political process in Alabama largely favors white candidates and needs to be reformed, as does the hearts and minds of people who are afraid to vote for a person just because of the color of his or her skin!
